Affiliate marketing has gained widespread popularity in recent years because of the low start up costs and ease of use. With all business ventures there are positives and negatives.

Risk Vs. Control

When you begin working as an affiliate you agree to promote and sell someone else's product. It gives you the opportunity to hit the ground running because you don't have to complete any market research to find a successful product. You can use past data from other affiliates to find out if a product is selling.

You also don't have to pay the cost required to develop and test a product. You don't build the merchant website, process transactions, ship out merchandise -- that's not what affiliates do. All you're focused on is promoting the product and getting sales. Everything else is the merchant's responsibility.

It's an incredibly attractive opportunity because you can start promoting a proven and established product without risking up front capital to develop a product.

The main drawback with affiliate marketing is control. If you wish the merchant's website were blue instead of neon green, there's nothing you can do about it. If you like the product but wish you could sell it outside of the country to get more overseas sales, the merchant would have control of the final decision.

Affiliate marketing allows you to choose any product you want to promote, in virtually any manner you want -- but rarely will you be able to make fundamental changes to the product you're selling or the website that sells it.

It's a great way to start earning money online if you don't already have an established internet business, or a large budget to develop your own product.
