What Does Google Consider Blackhat?

Some consider Google to be the evil empire that abuses their power, then there's the other side of the spectrum that sees Google in a constant battle to maintain ethical behavior among webmasters.

Whether you beleive Google operates with good intentions or they abuse their power, doesn't matter. It's their search engine. Their rules. You either follow their rules or Google won't let you succeed on their search engine.

That's where blackhat comes into play. There are certain "loopholes" that exist in Googles algorithm. A blackhat tactic is when you capitalize on those loopholes to benefit your website.

You kind of manipulate the system.

It's high risk, high reward. You can easily climb the rankings with several well known blackhat tactics, but once you're caught (and you will get caught) your website will be banned -- probably forever.

When Google finds blackhat tactics were used to promote your website and elevate your rankings they'll usually give you a ranking penalty so you're pushed further down the listings.

They might also give you a pagerank decrease which also has an effect on your search ranking.

Should Google decide the blackhat method was a clear violation of what they consider ethical behavior they will ban your domain. You're wiped of the Google planet and your website won't show up in their listings anymore.

Just recently Google gave a massive penalty to one of its own. Google Japan was caught buying links to promote their listings. They were given a pagerank decrease and a search rank penalty.
